Categories That Will Sail Ahead or Slip Behind in 1994

Which product categories will move ahead in 1994? Which ones are likely to drift downward?

When Drug Topics asked independents and chain drug retailers to answer these questions by using their intuition as well as their hard-earned experience, here's what they came up with:

* Some 28% of store owners on Main Streets around the country picked prescription products as the fastest-growing category next year. This was followed by home health care, chosen by 14%, over-the-counter drugs (12%), cough and cold products (11%), and greeting cards (9%). Gifts, health and beauty aids, and vitamins were also mentioned as possibilities.

Last year, Rx products also topped the independents' list of hot categories (37%). Home health care was next as the choice of 13%, followed by over-the-counter drugs (10%).

* Chain executives by an even greater number than independents--43%--saw prescription medications as leading the pack of fast-growing categories. Next in line were health and beauty aids, picked by 28%, and OTCs, named by 20%. Clout was also shown by consumables/beverages and cough and cold products (both 11%).
