The Rx Place Drug Mart: A New Woolworth Offering

Woolworth Corp. might be closing many of its variety stores, but it is becoming a more power drugstore retailer. New to the Woolworth family is The Rx Place Drug Mart for urban dwellers. It joins The Rx Place for suburbanites, which has been around for 10 years.

The New York-based chain announced last year that it was closing about half of its approximately 900 general merchandise stores in the United States. Many of the urban New York stores, which became the corner store to many, will now become convenience drugstores.

For urban markets, Woolworth is rolling out its Rx Place Drug Marts, which will be positioned as discount drugstores occupying 6,000-10,000 sq. ft. Instead of building the business around pharmacy, however, the urban units will be more like convenience stores, featuring snack foods, beauty items, and products to appeal to working women. The stores, frequently serving office buildings, can provide needed items for customers throughout the workday. All locations will have pharmacies, however.

There are currently four of these units up and running in Manhattan and one in Jersey City, N.J. Since October, 35 Woolworth variety stores have been closed, leaving only 67 in the Big Apple. At least 10 sites will become Rx Place Drug Marts. …
