Fifteen years ago, John Waclawski, R.Ph., started advertising insulin syringes in his Milwaukee drugstore. Soon his store had developed a reputation as being an all-service pharmacy for diabetic patients. Today, Waclawski is v.p. of Diabetic Shoppe, a wholesaler of diabetic supplies that provides marketing support for its network of 135 pharmacies in three states.

What does Diabetic Shoppe have to offer? For patients, is a one-stop shop for all their diabetic needs. Pharmacies with Diabetic Shoppes carry an extensive line of diabetic supplies. In addition to the usual items such as syringes, swabs, and insulin, they also carry medical alert bracelets, foot care products, glucose monitors, carrying cases, sugar-free cold preparations, and syringe disposal boxes. Unlike most traditional pharmacies, they carry an array of sugar-free candy and cookies as well as gadgets, log books, educational books, and cookbooks for diabetics.

But Diabetic Shoppes offer consumers more than supplies. Their pharmacists receive special training and are qualified to answer questions about foot care, diabetes support organizations, how to work a blood glucose meter, as well as medication questions. …
