Spend Ten: Jot Before You Shop

Who needs a shopping list? You do-unless you've got time and money to waste. Before your next dash to the store, follow these list-making pointers from Ellie Kay, author of The Debt Diet.

1 Keep a running grocery list on the fridge and train your family to add to it. That way, you're all set when shopping day comes. "Studies show the longer you're in the store, the more money you'll spend," says Kay.

2 Before entering the store, repeat: "I will stick to my list." Stray from it only for deeply discounted items you use frequently.

3 Ask the customer-service desk for a map or directory of the store and then organize your list by aisle. "That will keep you from wandering in circles looking for peanut butter," Kay says.

4 In your purse, keep a master list of items you'll need in the next few months. …
