GRANDMASTER Joe Gallagher has won this year's Smith & Williamson British Chess Championship in Scarborough. His victory was fully deserved and he displayed an enviable talent for winning critical games at the right moments. Gallagher scored 8/11 followed by Julian Hodgson (my own tip for the title), John Emms, Mark Hebden, Bogdan Lalic, Peter Wells, Daniel Gormally and Keith Arkell all on 7.5. Notable failures were Murray Chandler, who could manage only 6.5, and Tony Miles, who finished with 5.5 before withdrawing. Since these two grandmasters were mentioned in my dream allplay-all line-up the week before last, I think it can be safely assumed that their sub-par performances at Scarborough were aberrations. …
