After the Texas Seven escaped from the Connally Unit in Kenedy County, Texas, and upon evaluation by investigators, prison officials have made strides in improving security. The seven violent criminals escaped on Dec. 13 a stolen state-owned pickup. The escape was due in part to lax security and inattentiveness by employees. Massachusetts-based Security Response Technologies and Texas Department of Criminal Justice investigators evaluated prison security and found the incident occurred because of human error by prison employees. The evaluation prompted prison officials to change several rules, including limiting inmates' movements throughout the prison; forcing officers to keep their side arms holstered unless preparing to shoot; and forbidding civilian employees' entrance into the guard tower, among other items. Furthermore, prison officials are intensifying their training methods to ensure that prison employees are enforcing all pertinent policies.
