The Harmonious Craft

A wide variety of steel-string, classical, and archtop guitars from mostly Northwest-based luthiers will be on display at the Handmade Musical Instrument Exhibit, April 23-24, at Marylhurst University, near Portland, Oregon. With "The Harmonious Craft" as the organizing theme, the event will feature many of the handcrafted instruments (including violins, mandolins, bouzoukis, hurdy-gurdies, and more) in live performance. Scotty Moore Tribute

Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Albert Lee, Jeff Beck, Martin Taylor, and Pink Floyd's David Gilmour were among the guitarists who trundled their axes into London's Abbey Road Studios in December to film a concert-style tribute to the late Scotty Moore. As Elvis Presley's guitarist for 14 years, from the seminal mid-1950s Sun Studios sessions that produced "That's Alright Mama," "Blue Moon of Kentucky," and "Mystery Train" through the startling 1968 TV "comeback" special, Moore influenced countless guitarists in country, rockabilly, and rock. A DVD from the Abbey Road tribute sessions is expected later this year.

Although it packed more star power, the gathering of guitarists at Abbey Road was small potatoes compared to the 685 players who assembled during last year's Open Strings festival in Osnabruuml;ck, Germany, October 15-17.
