* Budget day will be Wednesday March 16, the Treasury announced on February 23. The budget will be Chancellor Cordon Brown's eighth since Labour came to power in May 1997. The Finance Bill could be carried forward to the next Parliament if, as expected, there is a general election on May 5.

* Councils in Wales are to crack down on bogus personal injury claims after a forecast that the bill currently £20m a year - could rise to £30m by 2008. Councils believe up to 70% of claims could be fraudulent.

* The London Borough of Camden is to fight a Treasury decision that it must abandon a Private Finance Initiative scheme to refurbish social housing because it is too costly. Camden claims it has spent £ 1.6m preparing the scheme and described the decision as 'extremely disappointing for tenants and residents'.

*The number of asylum-seekers coming to Britain has continued to fall, according to the latest figures published by the Home Office this week. …
