ALSC Creates Book List Online

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) of the American Library Association (ALA) has teamed with George Washington University's Center on Aging, Health & Humanities to develop a reading list of children's books that counters negative stereotypes about aging and the elderly. The list, consisting of 91 titles published between 1976 and 2002 for preK-grade 6 students, was compiled by ALSC and evaluated by more than 200 librarians, specialists, and consumers of varying ages. Titles on the list include Rose Meets Mrs. Wintergarten by Bob Graham, A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck, and Emma by Wendy Ann Kesselman. The list was developed in response to a study by the American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) and the National Academy for Teaching and Learning about Aging (NATLA) that showed most children hold a negative view of the elderly, despite having positive feelings toward older persons in their own families. The list is available online at http://www.gwumc.edu/cahh/booklist/booklist_20041110.pdf/. ALA, 800/545-2433 or http://www.ala.org/.
