PREPARING TO STYLE

* To add texture, hairstylist Elsie Knab recommends applying a thickening product like Sebastian Molding Mud to dry hair before starting.

* Keep fine hair from laying flat by trying a less extreme form of teasing called back combing. To back comb: Divide hair into two- or three-inch sections. Place one hand firmly at the ends to keep hair taut, then gently run a comb up the length of the hair toward the roots, starting about halfway from the ends. Avoid back combing the hair around the face.

GET TWISTING

1. Part hair on one side of the head, drawing the part back about two inches away from the face. Leave the parted hair hanging loose for now.

2. Gather the imparted hair into a ponytail a few inches from the base of the head.

3. Twist the ponytail up to the crown of the head, as if making a French twist. …
