Rural Councils to Collaborate to 'Improve Local Delivery'

Rural councils are to collaborate across authority and even regional boundaries to shore up the rural economy, tackle social exclusion and protect the natural environment.

The areas chosen as 'pathfinder partnerships' have published business plans setting out objectives and delivery methods.

The partnerships will involve councils working through local and regional agencies to test ways of improving local delivery.

Rural affairs minister Alun Michael said a one size fits all' approach did not suit the pathfinders. 'They vary widely in size, population and levels of rurality and economic deprivation.

'They range from county-wide partnerships to one involving three separate unitary authorities to one in the Peak District that crosses the East/West Midlands regional boundary.'

Michael said that the government 'was committed to devolving resources so they can be targeted most effectively, and the chosen pathfinders will set the standard by innovating ways to achieve this'. …
