This Mother's Day I'll be missing my mother terribly, and fondly remembering her joyful spirit. I wish you could have known her. Agnes Evans would have greeted you the first time with a big hug, and the next time she saw you, she would have pulled you to her for a happy kiss.

My mother was a brilliant vocational teacher who helped hundreds of students launch meaningful careers in the foodservice industry. She was a hardworking volunteer who managed the kitchen in our church for 50 years. She was a gregarious woman with a huge heart, who devoted her time and energy to a large network of friends, neighbors, former students and coworkers. My mother was a mentor, with dozens of "Daughters of Agnes" around the country who knew they could turn to her at any moment.

She was a happy wife, who married her childhood sweetheart-Bill, my dad-and shared 59 exciting years with him. …
