Preparing the next generation of hearing health professionals is a complex challenge that requires guidance from seasoned practitioners, best practices from quality clinical and educational programs, and focused learning opportunities from established institutions. As we continue to face shortages of pediatric audiologists and speech-language pathologists and low retention rates for teachers of the deaf, it is imperative that we provide future professionals with experiences that will allow them to expand their skills and ensure their longevity in these critical professions.

In this issue, we are proud to introduce a new series, "Achieving Excellence," that will highlight outstanding graduate programs in audiology, speech-language pathology and deaf education. We are honored to profile Fontbonne University (St. Louis. Mo.); Smith College (Northampton, Mass.); University of Texas, San Antonio (San Antonio, Texas); and Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tenn.). These university programs have been identified as providing exceptional training and learning opportunities for their students in the areas of aural habilitation, auditory learning and spoken language acquisition for children with hearing loss. Look for more "Achieving Excellence" profiles in the months to come.
