MPs Call for Curb in Drug Industry Influence

Drugs manufacturers have denied MPs' claims that they have too much influence over doctors and the Department of Health.

A report by the Commons' health select committee claimed that although the industry's influence was welcomed and relied on, it was also 'pervasive and persistent'.

This led to the suppression of adverse findings in clinical trials, while over-promotion of medicines was causing increases in the NHS drugs bill. Society had become bver-medicalised' in the belief that there was a pill for every ill'.

The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry denied that its member companies' marketing was so intensive it led to inappropriate prescribing.

'Most doctors receive only a handful of representative visits in a month. The majority say they value the clinical and product information provided,' it said. …
