CUSTOMIZED TAP SHOES BY 18-YEAR-OLD NYC-BASED HOOFER MICHELA MARINO-LERMAN.

YOU'LL NEED:

* Beads-colored seed beads, two decorative beads

* Craft glue, such as Magna-Tack

* Double-stick embossing tape or embossing sheets

* Fabric patch

* Feathers

* Needle and thread

* Chalk

OTHER DECORATIONS

* Replace laces with colorful ribbon

* Glitter, rhinestones or metallic studs

* Patterned fabric

* Craft paint

* Stickers (Use glue for extra staying power.)

You show your personality through your tap dancing, so why not do the same with your shoes? "I have been seeing more and more variations on shoe styles-people with colored shoes, two-tones, patent leather, stickers and anything else," says Michela Marino-Lerman, an 18-year-old NYC-based tapper. Michela dreamed up these two do-it-yourself designs especially for DS.

FEATHER AND ROSE CHARACTER

1. Using the craft glue, affix the fabric patch to one side of the shoe. Let dry for several minutes.

2. To add dimension and sparkle, glue colored seed beads to the patch. Michela suggests using different shades of beads to correspond to the colors on the patch.

3. Using the embossing tape or sheets, attach feathers to heels of shoe, starting at the bottom of the heel and fanning upward.

Hint: To save time, look for premade patches with feathers already attached, like the red and silver one Michela chose.

SUNNY BEADED OXFORD

1. Draw a half circle of glue near the toe and fill with gold beads. (For accuracy, sketch the design first with chalk.)

2. To form the sun's "rays," draw seven thin lines of glue extending out from the half circle, and apply gold beads. …
