* Five councils in the Lake District and Cumbria police are to be given extra funding to meet the costs of clearing up after the devastating floods in January. The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister announced grants would pay 85% of the cost under the Bellwin scheme for emergency relief.

* The much-troubled Millennium Dome is to be revived as a live entertainment centre, according to theAnschutz Entertainment Group. The £758m Dome, sold off by the government at a loss, is scheduled to reopen in April 2007.

* The Learning and Skills Council spent more than £lbn in 2003/04 on promoting equality of opportunity and diversity, according to its annual report. It reported rising success rates for ethnic minority groups and for women in further education and work-based learning.
