Scots Health Care Not Responding to Cash Boost

The Scottish Executive's health department lacks a clear strategy for improving performance and driving large-scale reform, a report by an influential committee of MSPs has concluded.

The Scottish Parliament's audit committee found that, given increased funding for the National Health Service in Scotland, the scale and pace of improvement in key areas was disappointing.

The report, published on June 2, follows the committee's inquiry into whether the significant rise in NHS funding is leading to improvements and providing value for money.

Committee convener Brian Monteith said: 'On current evidence, it is difficult to avoid the conclusion that some key service areas may be costing more but delivering less.

The decline in activity in some areas is particularly concerning, given recent high levels of investment and record numbers of staff in the system.'

Monteith added that the NHS worked well in many areas, but successive inquiries showed that the health department had failed to secure real improvements on core issues. …
