I loved the squib about name tags in this month's News section. In my experience, it's right on the mark in every detail. I've seen the floor littered with stick-on tags that have fallen off, and some people tell me it's not good for all materials.

And only in the last 30 years has it become popular to have colored ribbons, and they have really blossomed, as well as changed shape from the vertical to the horizontal, so you can get more on. I fully expect some ribbon collections to run all the way to the waist soon, like a Russian general.

I had fun years and years ago when I ran for ALA president (probably before your time) and lost. I had a bunch of ribbons made (you couldn't just order one) which were black and said on it: "ALA Failed Candidate," which I wore at the annual conference following the election. I felt it was better to have run and lost than not to have run at all. …
