Mark this rite of passage in low-key ways at home over the summer. Play favorite games and watch old family videos rather than celebrating a series of "lasts" (last Fourth of July, etc.)

Try not to let it get to you if your child gets moody or snappish before leaving or when you arrive on campus. New college students feel a lot of stress even though they want to appear as if everything's under control.

Barbara Meltz encourages parents to "radiate good cheer.. .and confidence" but also to remind your child to expect some bumps in the road.

Don't say your goodbyes in a dorm room in front of others. Go out to the parking lot where you can give your child a big hug and even have a good cry.
