Emerging Artists Spotlight

AUSTIN.... A showcase of up-and-coming Texas artists opens August 20 at the Austin Museum of Art Downtown. 22 to Watch: New Art in Austin is the second in a series of triennial exhibitions that began in 2002. Featured artists, who work in a range of media from painting to sculpture to photography to printmaking to mixed media, include Sterling Alien, Ledia Carroll, Hunter Cross, Jeffrey Dell, Peat Duggins, Young-Min Kang, Samantha Krukowski, Michael Osborne, Jason Singleton, Karen Skloss, and Trent Täte. The exhibition remains on view through October 30 and then travels to two other Texas venues: the Galveston Art Center, November 26-January 8, 2006, and the Dallas Center for Contemporary Art, April 7-June 10.

Ullberg Exhibit

HOUSTON.... The Houston Museum of Natural Science presents a touring retrospective exhibition of work by sculptor Kent Ullberg beginning August 13. Famed for wildlife pieces that depict everything from elephants to eagles to bears, Ullberg has installed work in public spaces around the world. The exhibit continues through October 30 and then moves on to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, AZ, November 15-January 1, 2006; and the Foothills Art Center in Golden, CO, January 14-March 12.

EL PASO.... New Mexico painter George Mendoza suddenly lost his sight at age 15-a devastating blow for a budding young athlete and artist. Yet Mendoza overcame countless obstacles and became both a world-record holder in the blind mile run and, later in life, a successful painter.
