* The Leader of the Commons, Geoff Hoon, has called for voting to be made compulsory to combat disenchantment with politics. In a speech to the Institute for Public Policy Research, he said compulsion was 'the most effective way to increase turnout'.

* Former prison officer Carol Lingard has won £477,600 for unfair dismissal in what is thought to be the highest settlement for a public sector claim. Lingard was forced out of her job at Wakefield prison after reporting claims that prisoners were being bullied.

* Water authorities in southern England are seeking new powers to deal with potential drought. Southern Water has applied to the Environment Agency for an order to allow it to reduce the flow of water into rivers. Elsewhere, Folkestone and Dover Water is seeking the right to impose meters on customers. …
