BRIDGE may keep your mind sharp, but it can leave you with a very wrinkly forehead. At least, that's what people keep warning me: I'm told I frown an awful lot when I'm playing. But I'm not the only one - to look around any bridge club is to see an array of faces being scrunched up, not just in concentration but also in disapproval and sometimes frank disgust.

None of this is any good either for complexions or for the morale of our partners. Perhaps we should all have an injection of Botox to immobilise our features as we come into the club.

Last week, I watched a member age dramatically as she frowned long and hard while her partner agonised over what card to play in defence:
