Exploring Beauty

BOULDER.... Smith-Klein Gallery presents new works by San Francisco-area painters Michael Shankman and Erin Dertner. Shankman is fond of painting the city. "Like portraits, my paintings are windows into a complex character: the city of San Francisco," Shankman says. "Geometric and intricate, the cityscape is as much a theater for light as it is for people." The artist hopes to convey the city's vibrant splendor that is often "a quarrel between natural light and artificial structure," he explains. Dertner explores natural beauty in her landscape paintings that depict coastal beaches and the pristine Northern California coast and countryside. Meet the artists at a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on September 2.

This month Gallery 1261 presents a show of sketches and studies that explore the artistic psyche. Scott Burdick, Lu Gong, Mark Nelson, Scott Fraser, Laura Robb, and Daniel Sprick are among the participating painters.
