RICHARD SELWAY, the host at TGR's, is very much the club jester - always cheeky, always cracking jokes - but there's no doubting his intelligence and skill. He took up bridge after a motorcycle accident badly damaged one leg, and is a terrific player - in a streetwise rather than technical sense. Somehow, it's not unattractive that he's missing his front teeth - he's had endless attempts to have new ones fitted, but they never quite seem to suit him.

He also has a wonderful ear for language. He fancies himself a cockney - and often uses rhyming slang - but is equally at home quoting Shakespeare. After someone criticised him the other day, he exclaimed: 'Prick me, do I not bleed?'

When I told him I was writing my column about him, he asked me to make sure his reputation 'remains tarnished'. But that's hard to do - this hand shows why anybody would be pleased to cut him as their partner:

West led the [clubs]Q, and Richard won in dummy. …
