I WAS delighted recently to get a letter from a Spectator reader, Mike Hervey, telling me that he and his fellow members of the Pensioners Bridge Club in Fish Hook, Cape Town, enjoy my bridge column. And when they finish reading it, he added jauntily, they pass it on to the Valkenburg Lunatic Asylum. Well, it's good to know it does the rounds.

A hand cropped up at TGR's the other day which might make you wonder whether some of our members wouldn't be perfectly at home in a mental hospital. The players were experienced, the stakes were high . . . yet the auction was truly bizarre:

Artur opened 1[spades], Jack overcalled INT, and Milos bid 2[hearts]. Artur then jumped to 5[hearts], inviting Milos to bid six with good trumps. Milos accepted, and when the bidding came round to Jack, he doubled. …
