This year's Varsity match was attended by the Lord Mayor of London Michael Savory, who opened the event. He also stayed for lunch, watched the games and proved a most congenial ambassador for the City of London. Cambridge scored 5 and Oxford scored 3.

Nevertheless, the players are still within the minutiae of Ruy Lopez theory. 17 Be3 c6 18 c4 Rec8 At this point Leko chose 19 Rc1 against Nigel Short from their game at Corus. I do not know why Luke rejected it but on the whole I prefer Leko's choice. Leko v. Short continued: 19 Rc1 a5 20 Qd2 bxc4 21 bxc4 cxd5 22 cxd5 Nc5 23 Bd3 h5 24 bxc5 dxc5 25 Qg5 and White went on to win a fine game. 19 Nd2 Nc5 Black's problem is that both of his bishops bite on granite, so the urgent strategic priority must be to find some active prospects for them. To this goal surely the correct route is 19 . . . a5 and if 20 a4 bxc4 21 bxc4 Ba6 22 Rb1 Qf8! planning the exchanging manoeuvre . …
