Control Centres Spearheading New-Look Fire Service Named

The government has named the sites for the first seven regional control centres that will eventually become the national operations network at the apex of the fire service.

Fire control centres, which will co-ordinate regional operations currently undertaken at a more local level, form a major part of the Office of the Deputy Prime Ministers modernisation plans for the service.

Nine centres will eventually replace the 46 local control rooms operating nationally. The reforms have been opposed by the Fire Brigades Union on safety grounds.

The locations of the regional sites, announced by fire minister Jim Fitzpatrick on August 10, are: Belmont Business Park, Durham; Lingley Mere Business Park, Great Sankey, Warrington; Cambridge Research Park, Cambridge; Willow Farm Business Park, Castle Donington, Leicestershire; Wolverhampton Business Park, Wolverhampton; Paragon Business Village, Wakefield, West Yorkshire; Blackbrook Business Park, Taunton, Somerset. …
