A five-string hybrid that can handle bass and cello duties

NS DESIGN HAS INTRODUCED an entirely new electric bowed instrument designed to deliver sounds ranging from a rich, expressive bowed voice to a punchy acoustic pizz to the classic electric bass. The five-string instrument has a 34-inch scale length, can be tuned in fourths for bassists or fifths for cellists, and covers the entire range of both instruments. The NS BASS CELLO employs both piezo and magnetic pickups. The company's Polar directional piezo bridge pickup system offers two modes of operation, arco and pizzicato. These allow the player to optimize bowed response, and to control attack and decay characteristics for plucking. EMG low-impedance magnetic pickups have a smooth response with lots of sweet midrange for the quintessential electric sound. Two balance controls allow unlimited mixing of the two systems. An on-board preamp provides master volume, bass, and treble controls. The Bass Cello is made of maple and features an ebony fingerboard. It can be set up with custom-made NS Bass Cello strings, designed for bowing, or it will accommodate any standard bass guitar string. $3,575. www.nedsteinberger.com
