Florida's Orange County Chairman Rich Crotty established the Jail Oversight Commission in an effort to deal with medical and mental health; substance abuse; technology; corrections staffing; and criminal justice case processing. The commission was developed following two cases when inmates died after suffering from methadone withdrawal. The 27-member commission includes the chief circuit judge; the Orlando police chief; the state attorney; and the public defender. Between now and January, the commission will discuss-in public meetings-the options for expanding on the above mentioned areas, and gather at the jail to further evaluate the areas that may need to be upgraded.
