If the lights seemed to glow a little brighter at Challenge's Chatsworth offices, it was because word had just been received that the son of one of our staffers, Lt. Scott H. Hulett, USN, had just been awarded the US Navy's prestigious GEORGE H.W. BUSH AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT as a first-tour carrier pilot flying the F/A-18E Super Hornet. Scott is the son of Air Classics' Advertising Manager George Hulett, himself a flying veteran of the Vietnam War. Scott's citation read in part:

For professional achievement as a pilot, landing signal officer, and tactical expert flying F/A-18E Super Hornets with VFA-137, Lt. Scott H. Hulett demonstrated a degree of professionalism, aerial skill, quick-thinking under pressure and superb leadership far beyond what is normally expected of a first-tour carrier pilot. He was the squadron's Line Division Officer, then Assistant Operations Officer, and an air wing Landing Signal Officer (LSO). His master of air-to-ground tactics, mission planning, and his in-depth knowledge of the Super Hornet's vast weapons and sensor suites and strike fighter mission planning knowledge helped create the air wing's standardized Smart Weapon and System Smart Pack, used by all strike fighter aircrew to simplify mission planning and weapon usage.

Under his tutelage and through his total grasp of the latest Top Gun tactics, he squadron achieved a 24-to-1 kill ration during pre-deployment training, the highest observed to date. …
