For a moment, think of wine in the spirit of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Future. Do that, and it can play a small but useful role in building and burnishing holiday traditions.

The trick is to allow yourself to be sentimental. Start with Christmas Past. With any luck at all, somewhere in the history of family or friendship is a wine that brings back warm feelings from earlier holidays. Rarity and price should have little to do with the choice. Indeed, chances are pretty good that some of our warmest memories date from years when money was in such short supply that a bargain-bin Chianti was a splurge. In any case, what matters is that the sight of the label and the taste of the wine, like old snapshots, trigger some feelings you would like to keep alive.

Because bottles of the same wine can be shared across any distance, it can rouse the spirit of a Christmas Past for people who cannot be together. With a little luck and some planning, you can even sit down to an agreed-upon menu at the same hour as family or friends far away, and raise a toast at an agreed-upon minute. …
