Ancestry and Innovation: African American Art from the Collection

Contemporary paintings, works on paper, sculpture and quilts by self-taught artists are included in this exhibit, a celebration of their contributions to American culture. Nearly 30 works of art and nine quilts from the museum's collection by established artists such as Thornton Dial Sr., Bessie Harvey and Sam Doyle, as well as emerging artists, are included.

Faith Ringgold is a painter, sculptor and print maker, but she is best known for her "story quilts," wondrous, detailed paintings on fabric. The exhibit of more than 50 works from throughout her 35-year career includes five quilts and will mark the debut of the Jazz Series, her newest work.
