* Housing minister Yvette Cooper has launched a £3m fund to help councils tackle homelessness among ethnic minority groups. The Ethnic Minorities Innovation Fund will provide cash to voluntary and community groups working alongside local authorities during 2006/07 and 2007/08.

* The Office of Fair Trading has urged councils to cut the cost of property searches. Charges to homebuyers varied from £55 to £269, the OFT found. It called on the government to give clear guidance on the prices councils can charge.

* The auditor general for Wales, Jeremy Colman, has called for more effort to protect NHS trust staff from violence and aggression. He said that in 2003/04 there were 22 attacks every day on health service staff in Wales, estimated to cost more than £6m annually in staff replacement, legal bills, training and security. …
