McCabe Claims to Be Ahead of Savings Game

The Scottish Executive has claimed it is doing better than anticipated in the search for efficiency savings, with £912m of cuts now identified.

Finance Minister Tom McCabe said that in addition to this revised figure, a further £337m in time-releasing savings - such as reductions in absenteeism and sick leave - had also been identified, taking the total to more than £1.2bn of recurring annual efficiency savings by 2007/08.

But he stressed that ministers would publish firm targets and figures only when they were convinced these were robust and, crucially, that they could deliver.

'We have worked closely with Audit Scotland and they are content with the detailed plans we have published,' he added.

When the Executive announced its original saving under the efficient government initiative in June 2004, the figure stood at £500m. …
