Taking a break from his duties as a visiting research professor at Harvard University, Dr. Saleh Jawad delivered a series of talks at Southern California campuses in December.

"Sociocide" is what the Birzeit University professor said the Israelis are perpetrating with their roadblocks, checkpoints, Jewish-only bypass highways and construction of the Apartheid Wall.

"Everything you consider normal--a hike in the mountains, a trip to the seaside, a visit to friends in another city--is forbidden," he declared. "Someday the Israelis will be punished for destroying our beautiful biblical landscape."

Dr. Jawad's passion is collecting the oral history of the Palestinians.

"The Israelis destroyed every written record, every library they could find," he said. "The only documentation is oral recollections, and this narrative must be recorded before the survivors of 1947-48 are gone."

After he received his doctorate from the Sorbonne, Dr. Jawad began collecting oral histories in the 1980s from the elderly in his hometown of Ramallah. Israel has one narrative, he stressed, while the Arabs--Palestinians, Jordanians and Egyptians--have different ones. …
