With such an emphasis placed upon fitness, beauty, and health, it's no wonder the diet aids category accounts for millions of dollars in sales in both food stores and drugstores each year. Both dollar sales and unit sales of diet aids in drugstores increased and surpassed dollar and unit sales of food stores during the year ending Nov. 30, 1995, versus the prior 12 months.

Total dollar sales of diet aids increased by 34o/o during the 12 months ending Nov. 30, 1995, from $97.0 million to a final figure of $130.0 million. While food stores saw only a slight increase in dollar sales of diet aids during this period, sales of these products in drugstores jumped significantly. Dollar sales of diet aids in drugstores increased 50% during this time period, from $65.2 million to $97.6 million. In food stores, dollar sales of diet aids increased only 2% from $31.7 million, yet they reached $32.4 million.

Towne-Oller's figures demonstrate that the unit sales of diet aids in drugstores were nearly double that of food stores during the 12 months ending Nov. 30, 1995.
