* Network Rail has set out a multibillion pound, ten-year plan to modernise three London terminuses - Euston, Victoria and Waterloo - and up to 50 large regional stations. Chief executive John Armitt called the scheme 'ambitious', but said it fused 'imagination with reality'.

* The role of the British Transport Police is to be reviewed. Transport Secretary Alistair Darling said he would be examining whether some of its functions could better be carried out by other bodies, such as local police.

* Department for Education and Skills permanent secretary Sir David Normington has said he shares business's concerns at the skills of school-leavers.
