* Fathers could be given the right to take three months' paternity leave with a £106-a-week state allowance under new government legislation. The Work and Families Bill extends paid maternity leave from six to nine months, with a provision for fathers rather than mothers to take the final three months.

* The government's chief medical officer. Sir Liam Donaldson, has announced plans to order 120 million does of flu vaccine - two for every person in the UK- for use in case of a flu pandemic. Donaldson published revised guidance as suspected bird flu was reported to have spread to Russia.

* Portsmouth City Council's project manager, David Greenhaigh, was trapped for two hours when the external lift in the city's new Spinnaker Tower jammed as it was opened on October 18. The delayed project cost £35.6m, at least £11.1m over budget.

* The Department of Health has agreed two £8m, five-year contracts for the first privately run walkin health clinics. …
