Housing has risen to the top of the political agenda recently and, with it, the demands made on professionals working in the sector.

Staff everywhere are striving to achieve the decent homes target and meet the increasing demand for social housing, while ensuring that the bread-and-butter services they provide are responsive to their tenants' needs.

It is a challenge, but one that many in the housing sector are meeting head on. Just like the sheltered housing team from Stoke-on-Trent City Council, winners of the 2005 Public Servants of the Year housing team award.

The 12-strong team was formed in 2004 after a review criticised the council's housing services for their lack of customer focus. They were determined to put that right and lost no time in getting to work.

Residents are now given a choice of colours, carpets and furniture during refurbishment, and regular information days are held so residents can give feedback.

Team manager Susan Hailstones says the award gave staff a major morale boost. …
