The courage, imagination and sheer hard work demonstrated by staff at the Leeds-based partnership Ambition: Energy were rewarded earlier this year when they were named the best central government team at the 2005 Public Servants of the Year Awards.

The partnership staff - from Jobcentre Plus, the Sector Skills Council and Energy & Utility Skills - received their award at the five-star prize-giving ceremony at London's Grosvenor House hotel in May.

The Ambition: Energy partnership project, set up as a pilot in 2002, developed an innovative programme to address skills shortages in the energy and utilities sectors.

It tested whether involving employers from these sectors in training programmes would help to boost the job prospects of long-term unemployed people.

By providing training in gas installation and maintenance, water utilities, detecting water leaks and pipefitting, the team secured jobs for 1,400 individuals.
