Get Your Exercise through Everyday Activities

Almost half of all U.S. workers report gaining weight since starting their current jobs, according to a report in Fortune magazine. Many of us have become "desk potatoes" in a perennial battle with the dreaded "office gut."

We don't need more reminders of the importance of eating less and exercising more, both individually and as a nation. We just need a way to do it amid the busy routines, time constraints and plentiful supply of rich food in our daily lives. Here are some suggestions:

Bring your lunch to work. This will make it easier for you to choose healthier foods and exercise portion control-and will likely save money as well. Instead of hitting the vending machines for an afternoon snack, bring an apple, carrots or container of yogurt.

Incorporate exercise into your daily activities. Take the stairs instead of riding in the elevator. Walk across the office with those papers rather than send a fax. Park farther from your destination so you have to walk briskly to get there. …
