Advanced Photo System Can Improve Amateur Pictures

Amateur photographers may soon see improvements in their pictures. No, their skills are not going to miraculously get better, but their equipment will. Rival photography companies, including Eastman Kodak Co. and Fuji Photo Film Co., have joined together to create new photography technology called Advanced Photo System (APS). New film, cameras, and photofinishing techniques have been designed to enhance the results of amateur photography efforts.

Each company has developed its own version of the system, but the technology is similar. The companies have recently been unveiling their new products, which are expected to become available in April.

Smart Film by Fuji and Advantix by Kodak both have a magnetic coating that records data about composition and lighting. The APS photofinishing equipment reads this and compensates for lighting errors during the developing process.
