MOST SUCCESS STORIES HAVE A COMMON THREAD-THEY ALL begin and end with people. Risk management is no different. Those of us in the profession can get caught up in the risk part of our jobs and forget the management part. While we can become successful by avoiding, preventing or insuring a risk, it is our people management skills that folks will remember most.

By focusing on the development and mentoring of our employees and others within our organizations, we have the chance to lay the foundation for not only our own success but for the success of others as well. This leads to true accomplishment as a leader and a manager.

But what traits or qualities do we look for in a successful leader or manager? Most top-notch people managers have certain traits, which at the very least should include the following:

* Passion. They move when opportunities present themselves and cheer on innovation from those whom they are involved with.

* Customer-Focused. They build effective relationships and provide the client (internal and external) with more than is expected.

* Allow Risk. They encourage independent thought and give latitude for trying something new.

*Open to Challenges. They set ambitious goals and persuade others to challenge themselves. …
