Park warden Bill Eastwood made a real difference to the people of Manchester when he transformed a neglected park in the deprived eastern quarter of the city into a thriving community resource.

Creating a group called Friends of King George Park, Eastwood brought together people from across the community to draw up a regeneration plan and raise the funds to turn their vision into a reality.

The group, which meets once a month, secured more than £30,000 in grants, and the once run-down space now boasts new sports and playground facilities as well as a relaxation garden.

Eastwood also set up a programme of events, including health walks, bulb-planting sessions and football tournaments to keep the community active in the park.

All his hard work caught the eye of the Public Servants of the Year Awards judging panel, which named Eastwood the frontline worker for 2005, honouring him with the raising the standard award. Since April's awards ceremony, he has been hard at work extending his approach to other parts of the city. …
