Employees Wrote the Book on Corporate Values

How many of your coworkers could generally define your company's values? How about it's vision statement? Or do you even have one? The Noel Group, a diversified travel company based in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, has one-and you may be surprised to learn how it came up with it. The company asked its employees to express their personal values and then packaged them as a small book entitled: "Foundations."

"We want to treat our employees the way we treat our customers," said John Noel, president of the Noel Group. "That means listening to them, and taking what they say seriously. It's part of the Stephen Covey philosophy in `The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.'"

Noel takes Covey's message pretty seriously. Last year, each of his employees attended Covey's training seminars. "It helped bring us back to the basic values that make people feel good, feel empowered," Noel said. "The 'Foundations' book is an expression of that it celebrates the values that each of our employees brings to our organization, and is tangible affirmation of our commitment to being the best in our industry. …
