The most disturbing dreams combine the familiar (your old high school cafeteria, for instance) with the bizarre (you're totally naked). Such is the case with Virtual World, the digital theme park next to Nike Town in Costa Mesa's Triangle Square.

Cruise into the comfortable lobby, decorated with Victorian-style furniture. Relax. Have a latte at the coffee bar. So far, so good.

Then the dream starts to get weird. The guy serving you is wearing a lab coat. He appears to be some sort of sinister scientist. His name is Drachmar. Drachmar asks if you're here for a mission, and that's when you begin to notice the airportlike voice over the PA system announcing the imminent departures of Missions Alpha 12 and Beta 09.

Where are we, anyway?

Virtual World is the latest and greatest high-tech game room around, a place where you can race through the canals of Mars or pilot behemoth walking tanks against enemy forces in the 30th century. …
