A Great Return on Your Investment

Article excerpt

As the wacky weather of the winter of '96 settles down and we look forward to a bright new spring, I think it is appropriate to reflect on where we have been as an association over the last several months and where we are headed.

The title of this month's column seems very appropriate since spring also means tax time, and if you've had any gains on your investments, you may be sharing them with Uncle Sam! When you consider your investment in your AVA membership, you get all the benefits and your return is tax free. Think about what your $40 national dues payment buys:

* One of the most tangible benefits of AVA membership is our award-winning Vocational Education Journal, which provides every member with the latest information about what works in the classroom for preparing youth and adults for a competitive workforce. We have been recognized by the association community as having one of the best professional publications for its members. You also can be proud that your Journal is subscribed to by thousands of libraries and other organizations as a valued periodical. The Journal also represents you well with policy makers at all levels who can read about current innovations taking place in the field.

* Our annual convention and trade show showcases the best vocational-technical education has to offer and gives participants new ideas to reinvigorate their teaching methods and programs. Those who came to Denver were treated to exciting speakers such as Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist Hedrick Smith, U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley, Miss America Shawntel Smith and Connie Podesta, who left the audience feeling as if they could walk on air.

Based on our best-selling Successful Strategies for Building a School-To-Careers System, these workshops also have had the benefit of reaching out to non-members to bring them into AVA. This benefits all AVA members because the more members we have, the stronger the voice of vocational-technical education at the national, state and local levels.

* We are making great strides in improving the image of vocational-technical education. Our new video, "Learning to Work, Working to Learn," is at the heart of a national campaign to educate the public about the benefits of vocational-technical programs. …
