Making It Happen with Technology Education-The NSF Project

The Technology Education Division of ACTS recently applied to the National Science Foundation (NSF) for a $1.3 million grant. This four-- year grant will bridge the new federal career cluster in manufacturing with the new ITEA standards for technology education and lead to the creation of teaching templates for the technology education classroom. The teaching templates can be used in a wide variety of technology education classrooms.

This summer, an ad hoc committee met in Kansas City to outline the grant proposal. Members of the Technology Education division working with the ad hoc committee include: Joe Burke, vice president of the division; Ron Gonzales, policy chair of the division; Fred Ruda, Fort Hays State University; Andy Schultz, University of Nebraska at Lincoln; and Craig Haugsness, Kansas State Department of Education and ad hoc committee chair. In Kansas City, the committee designed the linkages from the manufacturing career cluster to national technology education standards, and from there into the classroom.

Each teaching template will include five primary elements and strands within each element. …
