Buying Group Gives Members the Fax on Best Deals

A California pharmacist has created a club to let independents and small buying groups in on the best deals for pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter medications.

The fax machine is the medium of choice for Advance Services Group Inc. to help members shave the cost of brand and generic drugs, as well as OTCs, in return for an annual fee of $99. The Brentwood, Calif., club is currently sending out more than 2,000 faxes weekly to alert independents to special deals. The response has been so positive, an Internet World Wide Web site was created as another way for members to purchase weekly specials or choose from an inventory of more than 7,800 products, said president Mike Groman, Pharm.D., a former pharmacy owner.

While working in a closed pharmacy, Groman saw how much more retail pharmacies had to pay for the same products. He didn't think that was fair, so he began to develop contacts with various suppliers to get good pricing. Now, he said, he's been successful at wrangling "fantastic prices, especially on generics," and can "obtain the same merchandise offered to the real big guys. …
