LATIN SEEMS TO LEND ITSELF TO TRUisms: Ipsa scientia potestas est (knowledge is power)...Gutta cavat lapidem (dripping hollows stone). Perhaps these Latin expressions haven't gained the commercial success of some other phrases--Carpe diem (seize the day)...Caveat emtor (buyer beware)--that have made their way on to everything from calendars and coffee cups to T-shirts. But as I was thinking about this month's issue, a common theme emerged--one that smacks of the simplicity and truth that these Latin truisms share. So I dusted off my Latin texts to craft a new truism for risk management. Who knows, maybe there's a T-shirt in our future.

The notion, which is expressed this month in both "Pulling the Pieces Together: Strategies for Managing Disability Expenses," and "Bringing in Treatment: Establishing a Workplace Rehabilitation Program," goes something like this: The longer an employee is away from work, the longer it will be before the employee returns. …
